What is a qEEG Brain Map?

A qEEG (Quantitative Electroencephalogram) is a comprehensive assessment of the current state of the brain. This establishes a baseline measurement against which we can compare future assessments.

For people who engage in risk prone activity, this is a great way to identify changes in brain function after an injury or to track the progress of recovery.

Based on the results of the brain map, we can create a training plan to address any areas of concern.  The neurofeedback system provides us with training protocols that are designed to teach the brain how to regulate its patterns towards normal. The result of this re-balancing restores cognitive ability, health and restoration with lasting results.

During the neurofeedback mapping session, our system will be able to identify dysregulated brainwaves.

Why do a qEEG Brain Map?

The qEEG map process allows us to assess the brain wave patters and gather information about the specific regions of the brain and the electrical activity they are producing. The process will involve placing what looks like a swim cap on your head. This cap contains a number of sensors that measure the brain's activity across multiple frequency bands and regions. During the mapping process, the client will sit quietly with his or her eyes closed for about 10 minutes and then again with their eyes open for another 10 minutes. The system will then analyze the information and create a report including imagery of the brain, depicting which areas of the brain may have too much activity or not enough activity. This is report is called the Brain Map. This Brain Map will provide an overview of what is happening in the brain and, combined with other information we gather, will be used to develop a training regimen.

How is Neurofeedback Done?

We will place sensors in specific location on the head and ears to allow the computer to monitor the brainwave activity. Specialized equipment will amplify the electrical impulses and display them in the four key frequency bands. Our computer software will then provide a customized protocol to address the individual’s unique needs. During the training session the neurofeedback clinician will view the complete EEG signal as well as the chosen frequency bands. Exercises will be done while the client is watching a video or playing a game. The picture and sound will fade in and out depending on whether or not the brain is increasing or decreasing the desired frequencies.

Why Does Neurofeedback Work?

The brain is an amazing organ, with the ability to change its behavior due to Neuroplasticity. Neurofeedback takes advantage of this ability, and uses the same learning process that use whenever we acquire a new skill. The brain learns new abilities by forming connections between nerve cells and the pathways that connect different regions of the brain. The more you use these pathways the more adept the brain becomes at performing the specific task. In psychological terms, this type of learning is called “Operant Conditioning”. It is a type of learning by which responses become controlled because of consequences.  Neurofeedback offers ideal conditions, since the system has awareness of when the brain is producing more regulated brainwave patterns. It can then provide reinforcement for positive change.
