It Isn't Simple

These issues are more than just feeling “blue,” or “down in the dumps” once in a while. Everyone experiences sadness from time to time, which is normal and healthy.  It becomes a problem when the sadness won't stop. If the sadness is not temporary,  it will impact every aspect of your life from eating and sleeping, to work, relationships and even your sense of self.

Many Factors Take Part

A complex combination of factors can cause these symptoms to develop. Elements ranging from genetics, brain chemistry, lifestyle, environment, personality and even stress can play a role in impacting key areas of the brain. Your overall mood can change when the left, pre-frontal cortex is impacted. This area of the brain operates to engage us in positive moods, and effective social interactions.  When the left side of the brain slows down we will begin to pull away from others and lose interest in things we previously enjoyed. We may retreat to our bed and just lay there. Our moods may become very negative, and our energy may get low. We might not be able to sleep at all, or we might sleep too much. These are all ways our biology protects itself when the stresses and strains of life overwhelm us. A brief, mild bout of these feelings is not necessarily a bad thing or abnormal for most people, but when it goes on for more than two weeks and begins to undermine our daily life, then it becomes a serious problem

How Can Neurofeedback Help?

Neurofeedback is a drug-free approach. When a client wants to deal with the problem, neurofeedback therapists will typically place an electrode on the scalp over each side of the brain. Then a training protocol will be used to help the individual increase Alpha brain waves on the right side of their brain, while reducing Alpha waves on the left side. Simultaneously, Beta brainwaves are reduced on the right side of the brain, and increased on the left. As the left side of the brain increases in Beta activity, the client usually begins to feel more positive in their moods. The abnormal brainwave activity diminishes over a number of training sessions, improving brainwave patterns. When brainwave function is improved, moods are improved.
